Last time I stayed in Berlin it was at the Crowne Plaza just around the corner. This time I was using cash and not points and was travelling for pleasure not business so the cost of the Holiday Inn Express appealed especially as that rate (as with all HI Express Hotels) included breakfast.
Location wise, the hotel is as well placed as any other hotel in Berlin. The city itself is quite spread out and doesn’t have anywhere that could be described as the centre instead having several smaller “centres” instead. As such, it is the proximity of a hotel to transport links (Berlin has a great public transport system) that matters.
In this case, you are a 10 to 15 minute walk to the Zoologischer Garten S Bahn, UBahn and bus station and about 5 to 10 minute walk to the Wittenbergplatz U Bahn stop.
We caught the X9 bus from the airport to the Zoologischer Garten (about a 20 minute journey) and then walked to the hotel. On the way back we cheated and took the 100 bus from the stop just outside the hotel to the Zoologischer Garten and then the X9 from there.
So location wise, this is as central as you are going to get for Berlin and the general area feels safe.
The hotel is surrounded with a number of bars and restaurants in all directions within a few minutes walk so there is not need to eat in the hotel if you don’t want to.
Check in was handled by a trainee who whilst not 100% up to speed was courteous, welcoming and had us booked into out 8th floor room in a matter of minutes. Indeed that same member of staff stood out throughout our stay for being genuinely friendly and helpful. As a Priority Club Elite member I was also given free WiFi for the 3 days we were at the hotel. For those that have commented about the views from the top floor, trust me when I say, they are nothing to loose sleep over. Berlin does not have an iconic skyline.
Our room was like any other Holiday Inn Express I have ever stayed in and probably as big as the room I had at the Crowne Plaza I stayed in round the corner last time I was in Berlin. It was clean and functional and whilst its was basic, we didn’t go to Berlin to stay in our hotel room so it did what we needed it to do and we slept well.
Throughout out stay the service was good and staff friendly although on a couple of occasions it took a while to get served at the bar as the staff were all busy checking in staff and couldn’t do two things at once. Bar prices were more expensive than in the local bars but as hotel bar prices go, not too bad.
So there you have it.
No surprises and pretty much what you expect a Holiday Inn Express to be.
Location was OK
The room was OK
The service was OK
The price was OK
Indeed everything was OK and I really can’t find fault with anything.
So I would certainly use this hotel again if returning to Berlin either on my own or with my family. For the price paid, it offered good value for money and a pleasant stay and proved a good base from which to explore the city
